Chapter 2 of 20

Why I Hated Annuities, and Why Most Agents Still Sell the Wrong Ones

Here is something most people never think about. The agent sitting across the table from you is only allowed to sell what their company gives them access to. A lot of annuities in this country are sold by brand new agents. They just got licensed. They joined a captive agency, which means an agency that only represents one company or a small handful of companies. Their training was mostly about the products they are allowed to sell. Their income depends on selling those products. When that new agent walks into a family's living room, they are not comparing the top annuities from all the top carriers in the country. They cannot. Their agency only has a few products on the shelf. So they take those few products and try to fit them to whoever is in front of them. They are not bad people. Most of them are trying to do right. They just have very limited access, and they do not know what they do not know. Meanwhile, there are dozens of top-rated carriers offering annuities with:

Higher guaranteed rates Stronger income riders Long-term care built in Shorter surrender periods Lower fees Better death benefits

The captive agent has never seen those products. Their agency does not offer them. So the family gets sold the product that fits the agency's shelf, not the product that fits the family. This is one of the biggest problems in the annuity business, and almost nobody talks about it. I have watched it for thirty-five years. A family sits down with an agent who came recommended by a friend from church. That agent sells one product line, from one company. That product may be perfectly fine. Or it may be a mediocre fit that costs the family thousands of dollars over ten years compared to what a broker with wider access could have offered. Neither the family nor the agent knew what they were missing. The independent agents and firms that represent the top annuity carriers across the country are the ones who can actually compare products side by side and put the best one in front of the client. That is the difference between a sales rep and a real advisor. The way to protect yourself is to know what questions to ask, whether the person sitting across from you is captive or independent, brand new or thirty years in. That is what this book gives you. Now let me tell you what changed my focus on annuities altogether.
