Chapter 20 of 20

The Bottom Line

Annuities are tools. Not saviors. Not scams. Tools. Like any tool, they do one specific job well. Used for the wrong job, they cause harm. Used for the right job, they do something nothing else can do. The right annuity, in the right hand, at the right time, can give you a paycheck you cannot outlive. It can protect your principal from any market drop. It can double or triple your income if you need long-term care. It can grow your money at a guaranteed rate you can plan around. It can provide the pension your employer no longer offers. The wrong annuity, in the wrong hand, at the wrong time, can lock up money you need for years, charge you fees that eat every gain, and sit in your file cabinet as a source of regret. The difference is not in the product. It is in whether the tool fits the job, and whether the person recommending it has the access and the honesty to put the right one in front of you. Learn what you are being sold. Ask the seven questions. Watch for the red flags. Get a second opinion before you sign anything. If you already own one, get it audited. That is the truth about annuities. They are neither the answer to every financial problem nor the enemy of your retirement. They are a tool. Use them accordingly.
